Are Spiders more Common in the Fall?

siders in the fallServing Memphis, Cordova, Germantown & Collierville TN

The Cleveland Clinic estimates that up to 15% of Americans fear spiders. Are you one of them? If so, we hate to break it to you, but spiders become more active during the late summer and early fall. Why does this happen, and what can you do? Find out in this article from AAA Termite & Pest Control.

Why are spiders so active in early fall?

Like any other animal, including humans, spiders need shelter, food, and water. The search for any or all of them is what leads spiders to infiltrate your home. Spiders can be very small, making it possible for them to slip through tiny cracks in your home. Other conditions and factors can make your home more attractive to spiders. These include:

  • Crevices or broken screens in your doors and windows – These gaps provide an easy entry for arachnids.
  • Unkempt yard – If your yard has weeds or debris, or your lawn hasn’t been mowed recently, this is like rolling out a tiny welcome mat for any spiders in your neighborhood. High grass also can attract other bugs to your property—pests that spiders pursue as food.
  • Other pests – Just as we said, the presence of other insects could lure hungry spiders to you. That underscores the importance of keeping a clean home and reducing other pests.

Two spiders to watch for

Spiders might frighten you, but most arachnid species are harmless to humans. There are exceptions to that rule, though.

  • Black widows: These spiders are well-known. They have an unmistakable red hourglass shape on their black bodies. Black widows tend to build webs in garages or sheds or near the ground and will bite animals and people when they feel threatened.
  • Brown recluses: These spiders are brown with a darker brown mark in the shape of a violin. Their bites can cause incredible pain and may even require a trip to seek medical care. Low-lying webs are a sign you may have a brown recluse present, in which case you should contact a pest control professional to treat the problem.
