No one wants to deal with a household infestation of any type of pest. But if we were ranking the least desirable pest problems to have, an infestation of cockroaches likely would be at or near the top of the list. Roaches exacerbate pre-existing health conditions like asthma. They also carry disease and reproduce rapidly. Like most problems, it is easier to prevent roaches from entering your home than it is to treat an existing infestation. That’s why, today on the blog, your pest control experts in Memphis look at some of the factors that attract cockroaches to homes just like yours.
Step 1: Prepare the outside of your home
Unless roaches tag along in a suitcase or some packaging, they have to get into your home somehow, from somewhere outside. They do so in search of shelter, water and food just like any other creature. They may be more likely to seek entry when the weather is colder. Keep bushes trimmed back and your grass mowed to a low height. Clear away any weeds as well as organic debris that may attract roaches. Keep firewood at least a foot away from the walls of your home or any other external structure, such as a shed. Lastly, any mulch in garden beds should be kept a minimum distance of 6 inches away from your walls.
Step 2: Remove points of entry
Roaches can squeeze their way into smaller openings that you might realize. Even a crevice or crack that looks tiny can serve as an open door for roaches. Make sure to use a quality caulk to seal windows and doors, as well as any cracks in your foundation. If you can see the crack, it is big enough for roaches to use as an entry point. Make sure to investigate weather stripping around windows and doors and replace as needed. You also want to check pipes and light fixtures for any gaps.
Step 3: No open food
Roaches will not be interested in your home if there is no source of available food for them. Keep all your food in sealed, airtight containers. This includes pet food. Promptly remove any loose crumbs or spills. Wipe down and disinfect your counters and stovetop every day that could prove enticing for these pests. Avoid leaving dirty dishes in the sink overnight, take your trash out daily and use a lid with a tight seal on your trash can.
Step 4: Eliminate sources of water
No organism can survive without water – roaches included. Even a very small area of water could provide what roaches need. This includes condensation on pipes or inside windows, leaky pipes or appliances, damp dishcloths or sponges, wet towels and even your pet’s water dish.
Step 5: Clear out the clutter
Roaches prefer quiet, dark corners where they can set up their breeding ground. Reduce clutter to minimize these hiding spots. This includes any stacks of magazines, newspapers or junk mail, as well as unused cardboard boxes. Clean your home thoroughly, including under and behind your furniture, and also behind electronics. Regular dusting, sweeping and vacuuming will help deter roaches as well.
