When spring comes, that means that the swarming season has begun for termites. Is your home or business ready to repel these voracious pests? Not to worry. Today on the blog, your termite control technicians at AAA Termite & Pest take a look at five measures you can follow to lower your risk of a termite problem this year.

Step 1: Remove any wood near your home

Termites feed on wood, and they are not particularly picky about the type of wood or where it originates. That means any wood located close to the exterior of your home can be a tempting source of food to these tiny pests. Keep any wood at least five feet away from any structure on your property and a minimum of five inches off of the ground. This includes firewood, untreated lumber, scrap wood or old furniture.

Step 2: Be mindful of moisture levels

Termites thrive in a moist environment – the damper the conditions, the better they like it. Check the condition of your gutters or downspouts and make sure these are routing water away from the foundation of your home. Stay vigilant for leaks or areas of standing water near the base of your foundation or your crawl space.

Step 3: Seal any entry ways

Even the smallest crack or crevice can serve as a wide open door for termites. You can deny termites entry by using a silicone-based caulk or whatever product that you prefer to seal any openings in your foundation, walls, doors or roof. You should check the exterior of your property regularly to identify any new cracks in the foundation or siding.

Step 4: Be mindful of how you apply mulch

Mulch is a valuable tool for the home gardener. It helps to retain moisture in the soil of your garden or trees. Use too much mulch too close to the foundation of your home, though, and it creates an environment of excess moisture that can be quite tantalizing for termites. Make sure to keep any gardening mulch a minimum of five feet away from the foundation of your home or any other structures on your property.

Step 5: Have your property inspected regularly for termites

Regularly performed termite inspections represent your best defense against a possible infestation. We recommend that each property owner schedule an inspection once a year. By having these inspections performed by an experienced pest control technician, your property will be investigated by a professional who can identify signs of termites that otherwise would go unnoticed by an untrained individual. If evidence of termites is detected, our team can recommend preventive measures personalized to the needs of your property and the termite issue that is present.
