Pests such as fleas and ticks are not necessarily an indication of a dirty home. These unwanted houseguests can find their way inside any home by small cracks or holes in your foundation, around windows and doors, and even hitchhike a ride on your clothing or your pet’s fur. Since these pests survive by feeding on the blood of mammals such as humans and animals, they may just set up camp inside your home. Here are some facts that you may not know about these common household pests.
Fleas
Fleas are not vertically challenged by any means. In fact, fleas can jump up to eight feet high! Fleas also move easily between furniture and pets. Although there are more than 2,000 known species of fleas, the cat flea is the most common household flea that causes infestations in the United States. Many people think that fleas are common only with inside pets, but this simply is not the case. Rodents are known to carry fleas, so if you have a rodent problem, you may also be dealing with fleas.
Ticks
The most common tick brought into homes is the American dog tick, which prefers domestic dogs as their host. To find a host ticks will rest on grass or branches by hanging on with their hind legs, leaving their front legs free to attach to fur or clothing as it passes. Ticks make their way to the head and to areas where the skin is thinner when they attach themselves to a host. The desired area for a tick to feed on a dog is around the neck and ears. Ticks feed on the blood of their host and eat like they are at an uninvited all you can eat buffet, gorging themselves with enough blood to grow four times their normal size. This makes them easier to spot after a meal since they will be much larger.
